New business in Monticello

April 24, 2014

My friend just opened a bed and breakfast in Monticello, AR. It’s a great location for events, weddings, get-togethers or just lunch. She serves lunch too!

It’s a wonderful old house full of spacious rooms, a lovely staircase, and little porches. The outside is just as interesting as the inside with its large gazebo with the fun swirly floor.

She’s already done so much work on this home and the gardens are coming along nicely.

Check out her location in Monticello if you are in need of a great little bed and breakfast or a place to host an event.

The Shoot Shop

When I got my first digital camera there were so many things I wanted to do with it. Most importantly: capture beautiful images of my family. I wanted to create albums, frame-worthy portraits, and photos to share. I was able to start using the camera right away by turning it on auto, but I knew I wanted to know more. I wanted to use all the settings and learn all the stuff.

So, I began by reading my manual. I’m a reader by nature, but that manual was a bit dry and rather complicated. I read it several times and didn’t fully understand it. What I wished for was someone who could just show me how it worked. Explain how to take pictures on all the settings. I wanted a step-by-step guide to making it work.

I didn’t find anything like that, so my learning was slow and included a lot of trial and error.

Now that I know how to use my camera, I love teaching other people how to use theirs. I know how frustrating it is to want to do something and not even know how to start. I know how it feels to feel to know that sometimes you don’t even know the question to ask, and I know how it feels when you’re embarrassed to ask the most basic questions.

This is why Ruthanne and I started the Shoot Shop. We’ve both gotten a lot of questions and emails over the years from friends who wanted to know how to use their cameras. So we started this class. It’s a way to teach a small group of people at once and get them on their way to using their camera and getting better at taking pictures.

You can find out more about the class on this information page.

If you’ve always wanted to know more about photography but didn’t know where to start, start here. Start with us. We would love to help you learn.

Shoot Shop | Learn to use your camera | by Melissa Stover Photography

I can’t believe it’s been two years since Ruthanne and I did the Shoot Shop, a class for beginning DSLR users. I was terrified, sweating, my face was red, and I’m sure my voice was shaking because these things happen to me whenever I speak to a crowd and everyone is looking at me. I hate to be the center of attention and yet, I agreed to do it two years ago and now I am agreeing to do it again.

Why do I put myself through this torture? Because I really do enjoy teaching people how to use their cameras. And, once we get past the presenting information part of the class and start the one on one practicing, it becomes a whole lot more fun for me.

If you’ve made the investment in a big girl camera, it’s time to get it off auto and learn just how much you can do with it.

What will you learn in this class?

  • How to adjust your ISO, and why it’s important.
  • How to adjust your aperture and the changes it makes to your pictures when you do.
  • What is the exposure triangle, why it’s important, and how it works to make your pictures even better.
  • One-on-one training until you understand just how those buttons work.

Find out more about the class, read what past attendees have to say, and sign up to attend here. We are keeping the class small so we can do a lot of one on one instruction after the class. We want you to leave knowing how to use your camera.
